Present: Kristin Gorton, Phil Haslanger, John Hilliard, Kelly Jetzer, Gary Johnson, Michael Magness, Wendy Proctor, Ron Reichert, Shirley Robbins, Sonjia Short, Keith Von Der Heide. Absent: Barb Gallogly, Jon Boldebuck. Pastor Phil led in a prayer for God's guidance. Minutes of the June meeting were approved as presented, on motion by Sonjia and second by Michael. Pastors' Reports ---Phil: It has been a very busy summer at MUCC (see committee reports). No one from MUCC is going to Back Bay in October. Phil has been meeting with Fitchburg leaders, to find additional ways in which our members can become involved in the community. He has had four weddings and two memorial services this summer. During his two weeks in Israel, Kristin, Mary Ircink, Jacy Boldebuck, and Rev. Dave Michael will be on deck. Group study meetings are in the works. ---Kristin: She is participating in Job Seekers Together, and helping our youth make peace signs and the peace pole. She reports that the Act 7 Ride was the most successful ever, raising $300,000 for the Aids Network. Twelve MUCC members participated, providing a "cool" UCC presence at pit stops. She will preach at Darlington Sunday. Financial Report (John): Pledges are below budget, but only half as far below as last July. The situation is eased somewhat by some expenses being below budget. The Park Bank loan is expected to be paid up in a few months. The Trustees plan to send out a general mailing explaining our financial situation. It was moved by Wendy and seconded by Michael to accept this report. Motion carried. Committee Reports ---Trustees (Gary): They have discussed the church computer network, its needs and possibilities. Ted will provide a written report. They approved two donations from the Endowment Fund (Prison Ministry and Bright Stars) and also from this fund paid this year's Housing and Hope pledge of $1000, which is added to the congregation's fulfilled pledge of $1000. A timetable has been established for the 2010 budget. ---Adult Programming (Michael): A good time was had by about 20 people at the group camping experience at Governor Dodge Park. The annual picnic at Cosgroves' will be held in the fall. New ideas for the Silent Auction in October are being considered. ---Children's Programming (Kelly): Vacation Bible School last week was great, with lots of young kids, older children as Junior Guides, and some new helpers. The fall Church School schedule is being planned, and teacher training is scheduled. ---Membership (Wendy): A dinner was held for a group of new parents in our church, with child care. Pictures for a new Directory will be taken on October 23 and 24. Phil pointed out that so far this year we have 18 new members and have lost 5 from our congregation. There are a number of inactive members who will be checked on, as to whether they want to remain on our rolls. ---Outreach (Phil): Serving lunch to Allied Drive kids comes up next week. As noted, our Housing and Hope pledge of $2000 for 2009 has been fulfilled. The committee hopes to hear Susan Corrado, Allied Drive Parish Nurse, describe the new Co-op plan for the neighborhood. ---Worship (Sonjia): They had a good brainstorming session recently concerning new roles and new ideas for the committee, and some new people are interested in participating. Rally Day plans are underway. The Council made some suggestions concerning ushers. ---Building and Grounds: Some additional work is needed on the parking lot. We passed the annual fire inspection, but three sprinkler heads froze and need fixing. Ron will follow up with David Ast on this. Old Business Wendy reported for the Associate Pastor Search Committee. Twelve profiles were received, five chosen for study, and two selected as the top two candidates (both women). The Committee will hear them preach in neutral pulpits, and will have a candidate to recommend to the Council in October. If the Council accepts the recommendation, the candidate will be presented to the congregation for acceptance. The Council expressed appreciation to Wendy and her excellent committee. New Business ---Discussion of the legal requirements for paid staff of churches as well as businesses. Gary is our resource person for this, and will provide the forms. After our current major projects (Associate Pastor search, Stewardship activity) are finished, this matter will be dealt with. Suggestion: an organizational chart laying out personnel hiring, reporting, and reviewing responsibilities, to be produced by a task force. ---Discussion of Time and Talent forms: twice a year--send by e-mail-- add new categories-- publicize as being a fresh start-- do this separately from the Stewardship campaign-- invite changes and additions from Committee chairs. This is a work in progress. ---Another idea: no all-committee meeting; committee chairs could meet together at need. ---Ideas from Kaitlyn's Environmental Stewardship Task Force: a collection at the church of "computer stuff", which can be sent to a business which will recycle or dispose of it environmentally; a box for "small electronic stuff" at the church (next to the cell phone collection box?); and attention to lighting economy throughout the church. ---Discussion of the fact that Council terms are out of phase and not as required in our Constitution. Considered ways to restore terms to correct status. Meeting adjourned. NEXT: SEPTEMBER 9, 2009 at 6:45 p.m. Shirley Robbins, Recording Secretary |
